Château de Chillon

Bonivard's prison.

Bonivard was a renegade Savoy who was imprisoned here for four years. When the Romantic poet Lord Byron came to visit, Bonivard's story inspired him to write the poem "The Prisoner of Chillon".  Byron also scratched his name into a column.
